In a creative and memorable activity, the Medicine Intensive program staff created a way for students to understand first hand what it would be like for patients who struggle with mobility and vision issues. Together, each student practiced helping each other up with a waist band, completed an obstacle course using knee and elbow braces, a weighted vest, and either crutches or a walker, and went through a second short obstacle course using vision altering glasses. Competing in teams to see who could complete each course the fastest, the students not only had a blast but learned a valuable lesson as aspiring medical professionals about empathy and understanding patient needs.
