  • The students ended the night in a session with our Leadership Facilitator, Big Dave. They played a few rounds of Telephone, but then added on some twists like a handshake or a series of sounds. This hands-on activity is designed to help them further grasp the intricacies and importance of communication. We love seeing students have fun while growing their leadership skills!

  • The Engineering students had a session exploring the concepts of Empathy and Perspective with our Leadership Facilitator, Big Dave. They discussed the wheel of emotions and how they can implement it in their own lives to be more precise in evaluating their own emotions. They also walked through some different scenarios to practice working together and empathizing with each other, then watched a clip from the movie Inside Out and talked about the difference in the characters dismissing each others emotions versus empathizing with each other.

  • In their fourth leadership session with Big Dave, the students had discussions about resilience and empathy. They defined resilience as “growing despite adversity,” and chatted about being empathetic towards others as you cannot know how big another person’s adversity is. They also discussed the benefits of having a growth mindset vs a fixed mindset, so that no matter what is happening in their lives they are continuously growing to overcome it.

  • Today's leadership activities were all about helping students discover themselves. They began the day with the Personality Matrix activity held by Leadership Facilitator Lauren Ball, then moved onto more team building exercises. Students were placed into pairs with ropes connecting them, and instructed to get out without breaking the ropes. Once students figured it out, they ran to help other pairs free themselves before the time ran out. Later in the day, the students gathered for a talent show hosted by two of their peers. They encouraged each other to be bold and cheered loudly for each performance.

  • In their second leadership session of the day, NSEC students met with Leadership Facilitator Lauren Ball for the personality matrix activity. Here, they took a quiz on their personality type and were sorted into one of four groups: koala, peacock, lion, or owl. Each animal had a description of behaviors associated with it, as well as how to use those traits to strengthen leadership skills. Students were also given information on how to best work with each personality type. At the end of the session, students presented their traits in groups.
