  • Tonight the Cyber students were introduced to the idea of how computers and devices are connected through networks. They learned some basics on how they work, their architecture, and the importance of having secure networks. They then participated in an activity using software called WireShark, which allows them to hack into unsecured websites to capture and analyze packets being sent over the network they are connected to.

To get a better understanding of what goes into it, students got to get creative and build their own websites, designing how it looks and creating a fun story to go along with it! They had a fun time presenting their stories and showing off all the different things they figured out how to embed.

  • Today students went through different breakout groups in order to gain the basics skills necessary for them to complete their final projects. In one room, they worked in groups to try their hands at data forecasting by looking at past trends and growth analyses to predict the best outcomes for different scenarios; another room had to figure out how to get out of an escape room built in Python code to get hands-on experience in error tracing; and the last room learned about presenting data by evaluating different types of graphs and how they correlate with different information.

  • Students had a workshop tonight all about the benefits of good communication within the world of programming. They discussed how leaving good comments in their code can help with teamwork as well as for their individual projects to make it easier for their future selves. This tied in great with their last leadership session, Listening & Communication, as they recalled the skills they had discussed with Big Dave and were able to apply them to their data work!

  • Tonight the Data Science students heard a lecture about Data Validation, then got the chance to do their own hands-on work. They worked with Python code to make fields show as true or false depending on if the user enters the information correctly. They will apply these skills they are learning towards their research for their final Company Project!

  • During data collection, there are often responses that are blank or have answers that aren’t relevant. In data cleaning, students learned to import these files and how to clean them of these unwanted responses. On top of that, learned how to look for specific values, enabling them to get responses from desired respondents.

  • After a field trip to the FDA this morning to hear from real life data analysts, our DATA students dove right in to building up their own skills! In this Intro to Python workshop, the students got a foundation to the coding language that is the basis for all things data science. Their skills and understanding will continue to grow as they learn how to implement Python for their different projects this week.

  • The field of Data Science requires a lot of problem solving skills in order to successfully interpret and utilize data. In this workshop, students were presented a variety of programming problems in the Assembly language. More than figuring out the language, the goal was really to get them to start utilizing their own problem solving skills to find different paths towards the solution.

  • In the last hoorah for our Cybersecurity students, they competed in their final Capture the Flag hacking activity. They worked in teams to work through many different challenges, in which they had to solve problems to find a code and insert it as the correct “flag” to complete the level; the group with the most challenges completed won!
